American singer Don McLean has been issued with a restraining order by his wife after allegedly threatening to strangle her.
Patrisha McLean, who has been married to the star for 30 years, is reported to have claimed her husband assaulted and threatened her life.
The 55-year-old called police to their home in Camden, Maine, at 2am on Sunday stating she had been terrorised for four hours.
She had locked herself in the bathroom.
It led to police attending the scene and arresting the American Pie singer for domestic violence assault.
The star was later released from Knox County jail later that day after posting a $10,000 unsecured bail.
The couple have two children together, Jackie and Wyatt.
McLean, 70, is scheduled to appear in Knox County Unified Court in Rockland on February 22.
Police later released a mug shot of McLean taken when he was booked in.
The singer, who reportedly sold the handwritten lyrics to “American Pie” at Christie’s auction house for £840,000 in April, was last in trouble with police three years ago.
He was fined $400 (£280) in 2013 for driving 43 mph through a school zone when the speed limit was 15 mph.
McLean, who has lived in Camden since the early 1990s, argued the school zone warning lights weren’t flashing at the time but he was still fined.
